Islamic and Indian Art Week

  • Event date 26 - 27 October
  • Event location London
This October, Christie’s Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds Including Rugs and Carpets returns with a curated selection of carpets, ceramics, manuscripts, textiles, works on paper, and metalwork from the Islamic world. Two highlights include a sword and scabbard from the personal armoury of Indian ruler Tipu Sultan and a Persian 16th-century Safavid red-ground ‘Palmette and Bird’ carpet, formerly in the collection of the Rothschild family. We also celebrate the life and legacy of Toby Falk, a leading figure in the study of Indian paintings, as we offer over 150 of his cherished artworks in An Eye Enchanted: Paintings from the Toby Falk Collection.
With objects spanning the 9th century to the 20th century and representing a geographical area stretching from Spain to Central Asia, these two auctions highlight the global reach and longevity of Islamic and Indian cultures. With an extraordinary array of artistic styles and techniques, the sales will demonstrate why the high standards of craftsmanship shared across the region continue to be prized by collectors today and remain a subject of fascination by scholars like Toby Falk. The paintings from his collection, from the 15th to the 20th century, represent different schools across the Indian subcontinent, from Mughal to Pahari, Decani, Company School and some of the lesser-known centres in Rajasthan. With auction estimates ranging from £500 to £300,000, the collection promises to enchant everyone from seasoned collectors to those just starting out in this fascinating and diverse field.

Immerse yourself in the art of the Islamic and Indian worlds and experience our breathtaking, world-class exhibition in the heart of St James’s at Christie’s, King Street.

About Toby Falk

Toby Falke

Toby Falk was one of the foremost academics in the field of Indian painting. He died too soon in the 1990s after a brief battle with cancer, but before then was responsible for some of the most important academic texts on Indian and Islamic art. He famously catalogued the collection of the India Office Library and produced Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library in 1981. Amongst other publications were India Revealed (1989) based on the collections of two Scots, James and William Fraser who went to India at the beginning of the 19th century and were extensive patrons of Company School works, and the catalogues of Persian and Mughal miniatures and drawings exhibited by Colnaghi’s for the Festival of Islam in 1976. All are still go-to reference books for budding scholars and existing academics in the field.
